Nutrition
The subject of diet requires careful attention. When your Doctor
says that you must have proper nutrition, you may be thinking of three meals a
day and the four major food groups; meats, fruits, vegetables and grains, but
they are really referring to minerals, vitamins, and whole foods. These are
the raw materials your body continuously requires for building and maintaining
the cells in your body. Some of these nutrients are found in all foods, but
can be depleted through improper cooking and processing. Others can only be
obtained from certain fresh vegetables, fruits and parts of meat we rarely
eat.
In order to have a balanced diet, most people must restrict themselves from
common convenience foods popular in our culture. Here are the foods which
should be greatly reduced on a daily basis.
- White refined sugar and white refined flour.
- Alcoholic beverages, coffee, tea and cola drinks.
- Artificially flavored products with added preservatives.
- Junk foods, candy and empty calorie foods.
- Foods high in saturated fat and fried foods, including fast foods.
- Pre-prepared foods, low in nutritional value.
- All tobacco products
As a general guideline the following is what to do for better nutrition.
- Eat more raw foods. Cooking and canning destroys much of the nutrition
in foods that can be eaten raw. With the exception of canned tomatoes -
which can help prevent prostate cancer - fresh or frozen fruits and
vegetables always have more natural vitamins and minerals that canned
vegetables do. Steam vegetables rather than boiling if necessary.
- Select organically grown food when possible. They have lower amounts of
toxic elements than foods that are not grown organically.
- Eat whole foods. Much of the nutrition available to us in fruits and
vegetables can be found in the skin, so don't peel it off and throw it
away, unless it has been waxed or dyed.
- Stay hydrated! drink eight to ten 8-ounce/1 cup glasses of water a day.
- Consume 25-30 grams of fiber per day (about 3 servings). Whole-grain
breads and cereals, beans nuts and some fruits and vegetables are good
sources of fiber. High-fiber diets can help prevent digestive disorders,
heart disease and colon cancer.
