According to the US Food and Drug Administration, dietary supplements are not
perfect substitutes for conventional or fortified food. They are not good substitutes
for actual food. But when taken properly, nutritional supplements
can play a major role in achieving maximum health.
Some health circumstances
may require supplements. They include:
- Use of contraceptives or estrogen replacement therapies, pregnancy and
women breast feeding.
- Drug therapies which may interfere with the absorption of nutrients such
as antibiotics, diuretics, steroids.
- Alcoholism.
- Individuals who are dieting or vegetarian.
- Cancer - including radiation and chemotherapy.
- Major trauma such as severe burns and physical disease.
- People with poor diet profiles where vitamin intake is insufficient.
If you are using supplements,
keep these tips in mind.
- Don't overlook nutrition. Supplements are just that - an added source of
vitamins. It is important to eat dark greens, vegetables, nuts and seeds
and other natural foods.
- Since choosing the right supplements can be a complicated endeavor,
consult a Doctor, don't try to self prescribe or rely on the guidance of a
store clerk.
